THERMAE EUROPAE is a European cultural network aimed at improving awareness of and the preservation of the cultural heritage of thermal spas as well as to promote the cultural significance of thermal spa resorts and cities in Europe.

Project

THERMAE EUROPAE is a 3 year cooperation project, which aims at the valorisation and preservation of the thermal cultural heritage in Europe. Funded under the Culture 2000 EU Programme, it began on the 1st October 2006 and will run until the 30th September 2009.

The objective of the network is firstly to study, at a European level, the cultural heritage of thermal baths, discussing and identifying the needs for their preservation and valorisation.

Secondly, the network intends to promote thermal spa cities and resorts as dynamic cultural centres, able to promote cultural and dissemination events at an international level. Through an exchange of experiences and specific knowledge, the network intends to help spa resorts become more aware of the important cultural heritage they have, and methods to preserve it.

To realize the scope and exchange the knowledge at a wider European level, the partners have create an extensive network involving important thermal spa cities and thermal spa organisations from 11 countries. The project partners speak over 10 languages making Thermae Europae a multilingual and multicultural project.

Principal Actions of the Project

Action 1 – concerns the networking and management activities and incorporates the 5 co-organisers in an effective steering committee. All partners of the project are invited to participate in the steering committee works and are particularly involved in the international scientific committee.

Action 2 – intends to study the European thermal heritage in order to valorise it and to enhance the architectural thermal heritage with a book, a photo-reportage, a cultural magazine and a travelling exhibition. Another significant action in action 2 will be the realisation of specific artistic events in the city of Karlovy Vary, Varberg and Acqui Terme. This action responds to the needs of the co-organisers to exploit the international dimension of the network.

Action 3 – the dissemination action in order to amplify the action of the project to a wide public, to the specialists of the field and the media. Some instruments will be designed as a multi-language leaflet presenting the project.
