Code of Practice
Members of the British International Spa Association (BISA) have a responsibility in that they lay down the standards on which the Spa Industry will practice and build for the future of the industry and the future of spa educated therapists.
The Code of Practice is intended to:
- establish what is appropriate and accepted practice.
- protect members of the public, and therapists, from improper practice.
- The code is not intended to restrict honourable standards or restrict members under instruction in their work, however it does place a member under an obligation to the profession.
Code of Practice
- An application for membership will not be accepted unless the applicant agrees to conform with the rules and regulations of the Association, or further decisions which may be made by the Council.
- A member must always act with due regard to the laws of the country.
- A member shall maintain and keep proper records of the working Spa.
- A member shall maintain premises in a clean and hygienic condition.
- In the work place a member shall use only suitable treatments and all apparatus should be safe and maintained to a suitable standard of hygiene and working order.
- A member shall in no way disparage the methods of a fellow member.
- A member shall not treat any person who, to their knowledge, could be suffering from any condition likely to be affected by the treatment, without the knowledge and consent of the client’s medical practitioner.
- No member shall give injections or prescribe pills, ointments or lotions which should be prescribed by a medical practitioner.
- All duly constituted medical bodies shall be respected and endeavours made to establish and maintain the esteem of medical practitioners with whom members may come into working contact.
Breach of Code
Any breach of the code by any member may be deemed misconduct by him or her. Should the Council consider that a member is, or may be, in breach of this code, such member may be called before the Council and be required to provide an explanation for his or her conduct, and to show good reason why he or she should not be struck off the register of members.
All complaints of misconduct must be put in writing and sent to the Secretary. The Association reserves the right to investigate all complaints and to take any appropriate steps in the interests of the Association.
